New Casino Off To A Rough Start - 2004-01-01
Growing pains have replaced the euphoria that came with the grand opening of the Tulalip Tribes' new casino six months ago. The 227,000-square-foot "cash cow" was seen as the next step in ensuring the tribes' financial security - the catalyst that would allow them to diversify and build a hotel, outlet mall and amusement park on their reservation adjacent to Marysville. But "the casino didn't live up to our estimations," said Tulalip Tribal Chairman Herman Williams Jr.

The tribes fired the casino's chief operating officer, Chuck James, in October, citing "philosophical differences." Since then, tribal leaders have been fighting off complaints from some tribal members, who believe the leaders have more money than they say they do.

Broken Head Casino Won't Go Ahead - 2004-01-01
The last of five proposals for native casinos in Manitoba will not proceed, the provincial government declared on Tuesday. A review by the Manitoba Gaming Control Commission suggested the proposal for the Brokenhead River Casino Resort not proceed because the project could not ensure firm financing committments.

The minister responsible for casinos in Manitoba, Tim Sale announced the province has accepted the commission's suggestion. The failed bid for the casino, to be situated on a First Nation reserve roughly 70 kilometres north of Winnipeg, was one of five native casino applications approved by the province three years ago.
