Casinos take a punt on RFID - 2004-01-11 Gambling chips may be embedded with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in a new plan to help casinos eliminate fraud, and to monitor customers' wins and losses.
According to a report in this week's New Scientist, an American firm that produces gambling chips has begun including RFID tags in its products. Chipco's idea is to help casinos prevent fake chips being smuggled into their premises -- previously, more low-tech techniques such as infra-red ink were used to distinguish authentic chips. The statement raises a proposed share issue to "help fund the intended buyback by Christchurch Casino of the stake held by the UK company Aspinalls".
