Proposal to expand bingo hall cuts out bingo - 2004-01-12
The Ho-Chunk Nation's proposal to convert a bingo hall into a casino would eliminate the 1,200-seat bingo hall to free space for hundreds of slot machines.

Dane County residents will vote in a Feb. 17 referendum on expanded gambling at DeJope Bingo Hall, allowing games such as slot machines, blackjack, poker and roulette.

If the referendum is approved and Gov. Jim Doyle authorizes a casino, the bingo hall will be replaced with 600 to 1,000 slot machines, said Gerald Cleveland, a tribal legislator for Ho-Chunk.

Smoke ban hurts bingo halls - 2004-01-12
A report on the significant decline in revenue at London charity bingos shows "the chickens are coming home to roost" on the city's no-smoking bylaw, says a city councillor. The report going to city council's community and protective services committee tonight shows revenues at bingos plunged after the July 1 smoking ban took effect.

It also cites as contributing factors in bingo hall woes the economy and the opening of the slot casino a few years ago at Western Fair in London.
