Inside Gaming Column: Hey, Guys! The Strip's Over There ... - 2004-01-12
"Casino" debuts this summer (date undecided) on Fox. Storyboards at the network say it's about two "new, young owners of the Golden Nugget hotel in Las Vegas (who) try ... rivaling other hotels on the Strip." Get real about the geography, guys. But, "Survivor" creator Mark Burnett is betting anything relating to Las Vegas guarantees success on TV. Still, gaming industry insiders are wary that Tim Poster and Tom Breitling, who are buying the Golden Nugget this month, are appealing to the wrong customer base.

Down Easters say it's likely casino gambling will be on the ballot in Rhode Island this year. Representatives for Las Vegas-based Harrah's Entertainment have promised to be the first and foremost lobbyists in the statehouse this month, meeting with Democratic lawmakers and organized labor.

Binion's Horseshoe: Casino to Remain Closed - 2004-01-12
Unable or unwilling to raise the funds required to uphold her casino bankroll, Binion's Horseshoe owner Becky Binion Behnen agreed Saturday to keep her casino closed.

Her deal, approved by an emergency Saturday afternoon meeting of the Nevada Gaming Commission, requires Behnen to keep the 52-year-old casino closed until state regulators agree that it has enough funds available to cover gamblers' winnings.

But with the casino and its hotel closed, the future of the Horseshoe Club and its 1,000-plus workers remained unclear.

Former owner Jack Binion, who operated the property until sister Behnen assumed control of it in 1998, said Saturday that he won't be returning to control the family landmark.
