Ameristar, Harrah's see big gains in December - 2004-01-12
The Ameristar Casino-St. Charles witnessed its December revenue grow 15 percent while the number of patrons boarded increased 8 percent, the Missouri Gaming Commission said Monday.

The casino reported $22.8 million in profits and 369,414 patrons boarded in the month.

Harrah's St. Louis Casino and Hotel boarded 12 percent more patrons, at 391,221, and revenue of $20.7 million, up roughly 13 percent.

The President Casino on Laclede's Landing saw a 5 percent decline in both revenue and the number of patrons boarded. The riverboat loaded 115,199 patrons and had revenue of nearly $5.5 million.

Tribes weighing strategy against gaming measure - 2004-01-12
As California's flush Indian tribes get ready to deal with an initiative targeted for the November ballot that jeopardizes their monopoly on casino gambling,
some within their ranks are advising restraint.

If that advice is taken, it would represent a noticeable change in strategy for a political power that has built a reputation for spending whatever it takes to win.

A number of prominent tribal officials are warning that flaunting their wealth in another political contest could backfire and end up benefiting the racetracks and cardrooms that are sponsoring the November initiative.
