Detroit casinos offer promise, problems - 2004-01-13
Several weeks following the opening of the Greektown casino in this blighted city's downtown, a sign was put up across the street on a door to the Second Baptist Church, the oldest black church in Michigan: "Gamblers Anonymous: Open meeting every Monday."

The church was once a station on the Underground Railroad. Now it sees a steady stream of refugees from Greektown, desperate men and women looking for help after losing life savings - and their taxi fare home - at a casino that netted $301 million
last year.

Officer, suspect recovering after trading gunfire - 2004-01-13
A police officer and carjacking suspect were both recovering following a gunfire exchange that took place over the weekend in front of a Las Vegas Strip hotel-casino.

Keenon Babcock, 24, robbed a man and took his car late Friday night, Lt. Tom Monahan said. Police later spotted the car and chased Babcock, who crashed into a taxi cab on the Strip about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Monahan said. Police said Babcock fled on foot and shot Officer Kenny Delzer, 30, in the upper leg as he attempted to enter the Paris Las Vegas hotel-casino.
