If the people of Upper Michigan are for the proposed Negaunee Township casino, so is the governor.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is presently evaluating the land in trust application before sending it to Lansing for review. At Saturday's tribal council meeting, KBIC Chairman Gene Emery said he hopes the tribe can start construction on the new casino this year.

Sebelius Embraces Call For State-Owned Casino - 2004-01-14
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will propose a state-owned casino close to the Kansas Speedway, but administration spokesmen said that negotiations with American Indians or others wanting to develop gambling venues will still proceed.

"If this is done right, it would be a very big boost" to the economy, Sebelius' chief counsel Matthew All told the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee. He said the governor's plan would follow recommendations from a task force Sebelius appointed last year.
