Casino tribes gear up against initiative plan - 2004-01-15
Facing a planned initiative to end their voter-approved monopoly on slot machines, California's Indian casino tribes have started assembling an arsenal that includes legal challenges, plenty of money -- and potentially an initiative of their own.

"This is clearly the first step toward a massive expansion of non-Indian gaming in the state," California Nations Indian Gaming Association Chairman Anthony Miranda told attendees Wednesday at the ninth annual Western Indian Gaming Conference.

Mayors make last minute pitch for Crestwood casino site - 2004-01-15
In a last-resort attempt to save Crestwood's casino plan, a group of south suburban mayors are meeting with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District officials to negotiate a last-minute property lease.

If they aren't successful, towns involved in the Crestwood plan appear ready to throw their support behind Country Club Hills' proposal, sources said. An announcement could come Friday.
