Casino Tribes Gear Up Against Initiative Plan - 2004-01-16
Faced with a proposed plan to end their voter-approved monopoly on slot machines, California's Indian casino tribes have started assembling an arsenal that includes legal challenges, lots of money -- and perhaps an initiative of their own.

"This is clearly the first step toward a massive expansion of non-Indian gaming in the state," California Nations Indian Gaming Association Chairman Anthony Miranda told attendees at the ninth annual Western Indian Gaming Conference.

Poker champ and well-known furrier Perry Green is getting credit for the idea, and it's not simply card table chat. Green, contacted by phone in Mississippi,
where he is attending a poker tournament, said Thursday, "The state can take a white elephant building and put it to a use that makes sense."
