Culinary Union Helping Binion's Employees - 2004-01-16
Hundreds of Binion's employees are receiving help finding work after they lost their jobs when the casino-hotel was shut down last week. The Culinary Union is helping both union and non-union workers find other jobs, get help paying their bills, and sign up for unemployment benefits over the internet.

Around 1,000 people were laid off when federal and gaming officials shut down the casino to collect $2 million in unpaid union benefits. Most are hoping that Harrah's -- who is in the process of buying the property -- will get the casino up and running soon.

DeSoto County: Tennessee lottery won't affect gaming industry, say officials - 2004-01-16
Tennessee’s lottery won’t lure people away from the casinos in Tunica in the view of John Osborne of Hernando, general manager of the Hollywood Casino and president of the Mississippi Gaming Association.

“We believe the casino gaming offers a different form of entertainment than buying a lottery ticket,” Osborne said. “When people buy gas or a newspaper, they will probably buy a lottery ticket but casino gaming offers such amenities as world class spas, golf courses, theater, hotels and entertainment.”
