Tribe takes land claim to federal court - 2004-01-16
Failing so far to receive legislative approval to operate slot machines in Pennsylvania, an Oklahoma tribe filed a federal lawsuit yesterday to get back 315 acres of ancestral tribal land in Northampton County.

The lawsuit - which claims the land was stolen from the Delaware Nation more than 200 years ago - is the tribe's first step in a long and difficult legal battle to secure land rights in Pennsylvania and, as a result, the right to build a casino in the state.

Anniversary tour heralds Newport fest - 2004-01-16
This year, the Newport Jazz Festival, which was started at the Newport, R.I., Casino in July 1954, celebrates its golden anniversary. The fest, organized by George Wein's Festival Productions, has showcased many greats, among them Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Ray Charles.

To mark the anniversary, and offer a dramatic build-up to the 50th festival, which will be held Aug. 12-15 at historic Fort Adams Park in Newport, Wein, with presenting help from Columbia Artists Management, is sending some top players out for a three-month, 55-city swing.
