Bidding starts anew for casino license - 2004-01-19
The hands have been dealt for players competing for Illinois' coveted 10th casino license. Sort of.

Betting ends today. More or less. And players show their cards Tuesday. Pretty much.

Then the state's gambling commission will decide, after all these years, which of at least five suburbs will be home to the casino that could become Illinois' largest. Maybe.

At least six groups - from new civic alliances to stalwart private suitors - are bidding on the license. The deadline is today.

Detroit will never be Las Vegas, but it seems to be quite a good place to set up a gambling casino -- and to test the theory that gambling is one of the few recession-proof businesses.

Detroit's three casinos opened around the end of the booming '90s, when the economy was headed for the Dumpster. Although the state and Detroit area have remained in worse shape than the nation, casinos have exceeded expectations, taking in $4.2 billion since 1999.

They also have been among the few job generators in recent years, employing 8,200 people.
