Detroit will never be Las Vegas, but it seems to be quite a good place to set up a gambling casino -- and to test the theory that gambling is one of the few recession-proof businesses.
Detroit's three casinos opened around the end of the booming '90s, when the economy was headed for the Dumpster. Although the state and Detroit area have remained in worse shape than the nation, casinos have exceeded expectations, taking in $4.2 billion since 1999.
They also have been among the few job generators in recent years, employing 8,200 people.
