Waukegan joins the chase for last casino license - 2004-01-20
Let the poor-mouthing and viciousness begin. You wouldn't typically expect much of that sort of thing from Richard Hyde, the proud and polite 77-year-old mayor of Waukegan, but there's a riverboat casino license at stake.
This is no time for the faint of heart.
Hyde, a retired high school athletic director and former fighter pilot, went into extensive detail Monday about just how bad things are in Waukegan: 30,000 jobs lost in the last 30 years, an unemployment level 25 percent higher than for the Chicago region, 12,000 residents living at or below the poverty level.
