Dane County Casino Referendum Approaches - 2004-01-20
Less than a month remains before the Dane County
casino referendum, and each side is rolling out casino studies.

The first volley came Monday as a study, sponsored
by the Ho-Chunk Nation and other casino backers, says Dane County would cash in big on a casino. The report, by Northstar Economics, says a casino would pump $47 million yearly into the Dane
County economy and create close to 1,400 jobs, including 600 at the casino. The city and county would see a total $10 million a year in new tax revenue - including almost $3 million a year from sales and property taxes separate from the negotiated subsidies, the study said.

Wyden will send top staffer to address casino issue - 2004-01-20
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said he plans to send his top staffer to Florence to decide whether an amicable solution can be found to the division created over a tribal casino by the coastal town.

Speaking at a town-hall meeting in Coos Bay on Saturday, Wyden said his chief of staff should be in Florence within the next few weeks to discuss the issue with opponents of the casino as well as the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians.
