Veteran police spokesman leaving for casino job - 2004-01-21
Jim Mattheis, longtime spokesman for the Tacoma Police Department, is resigning to assume the position of director of security and risk management
at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Chehalis.

"I am looking forward to that - not being tied to the pager and the phone," he said of his new job.

Mattheis, 46, is a 23-year veteran of the Police Department. He has been public information officer and media spokesman for the last decade. His retirement date is Feb. 15, but he starts his new job Feb. 1.

No Dane Casino study contends $150 million cost per year - 2004-01-21
A study financed by the local anti-casino group shows the Dane County economy losing about $150 million a year if DeJope Bingo Hall is converted into a casino.

National gambling expert William Thompson spent a busy day in Madison on Tuesday, presenting his report to the press, local officials and the public.

"This casino is bad for Dane County," Thompson said.

Thompson, a professor of public administration at the University of Nevada- Las Vegas, has written several books on casino gambling.
