Casino will mean jobs, B.C. Fed head says - 2004-01-21
Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair threw his support Tuesday behind a planned False Creek casino with as much as 600 slot machines and 60 gaming tables.

"It's not complicated," Sinclair said of his endorsement. "We want decent paying jobs in this city." Sinclair's comments were made at a public hearing on the proposal that began Tuesday night with 100 names on the speakers' list.

Mayor Larry Campbell said council would hear submissions until midnight, then reconvene tonight if necessary.

House Gaming chair says new casino taxes unlikely - 2004-01-21
Rep. Bobby Moak, chairman of the new House Gaming Committee, says he predicts there will be no tax increases on casinos in the next four years.

However, in an interview Tuesday, he added: "I'm not going to say 'never.' Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow."

Mississippi has struggled with a tight state budget the past three years, and some people have suggested raising gaming taxes to bring in more revenue.
