Don't bet on new casino just yet - 2004-01-21
Gov. Bill Owens can nix a casino development on any new Indian reservation, spokesman Dan Hopkins stated Tuesday.

"The governor's legal office has reviewed the federal laws on this issue and it is very clear that for Indian reservations created after 1988, the governor has the authority to prohibit gaming," Hopkins said.

Owens requested the legal opinion after a Longmont-based investment firm and the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes revealed plans to purchase 500 acres in Colorado, create a reservation and open a casino.

MADISON, WIS.: Casino foes, advocates release dueling impact studies - 2004-01-21
A proposal to convert the Ho-Chunk Nation's bingo hall into a full-fledged casino would either add $47 million yearly to Dane County's economy or rob it of $150 million annually, according to two opposing studies.

Opponents of the proposal released the study they paid for Tuesday. Done by gambling economist William Thompson, it argues the casino on the outskirts of Madison would hurt Dane County because area residents would be the dominant patrons and most of the money lost there would come from them.
