Big casino wins dent Stanley's profits - 2004-01-22
British betting firm Stanley Leisure has posted a 13% decline in first-half earnings after some punters enjoyed big wins at its key Crockfords casino.

Stanley, which operates 41 casinos and more than 600 betting shops, said today that profit before tax and goodwill fell to £21.5m (€31.1m) in the six months to October 26.

Betting turnover, including its shops in the Republic of Ireland, jumped 73% to £661m (€958m), with profits up 44% to £15.6m (€22.6m).

Tribe revives casino plan - 2004-01-22
The Stillaguamish Tribe had to fold its hand the first time it tried to develop a casino.

But the tribe never gave up on the idea, and like a patient card player, it has a new hand to play.

After months of soliciting and reviewing new investment proposals, the tribe has lined up a $19 million loan from Marshall Bank of Minneapolis to construct a 22,000-square-foot casino on 20 acres of federal trust land the tribe owns a few miles northwest of Arlington.
