Carcieri looks to nail down take from future casino - 2004-01-22
Still opposed to a planned casino, but protective of the state's two existing gambling parlors, Gov. Donald L. Carcieri is proposing two pieces of legislation that would act to keep a casino at bay.
One bill would demand any casino to pay the same share of revenues, 60 percent of the slot machine take, that Lincoln Park and Newport Grand pay. The
other would prohibit any single corporation from owning more than one gambling facility in the state.
The governor's proposals come on the heels of a poll conducted by Lincoln Park that found nearly 60 percent of Rhode Islanders favor a casino, but 75 percent said it should pay the same gaming tax as Lincoln and Newport.
