Need for cash kills city ban on slots - 2004-01-23
Vancouver's long-standing ban on slots ended Thursday when city council voted 5-4 to permit 600 of the machines at the Plaza of Nations.

But council's approval came with a number of last-minute conditions -- including requiring the casino to hire people from the Downtown Eastside and letting community groups use the casino's 500-seat theatre for cultural events.

Mayor Larry Campbell, who voted in favour of the machines, said the casino vote was a "very difficult decision for everybody" but that the city needs the extra $10-$12 million in revenue the slots will generate.

Gormley, Asselta named to new wagering panel - 2004-01-23
Republican leadership appointed two strong advocates of the casino industry to the state Senate's newly formed Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee on Thursday.

Sen. Bill Gormley, R-Atlantic, and Sen. Nicholas Asselta, R-Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic, are expected to be vocal opponents of any plans for Video Lottery Terminals, or VLTs, at racetracks because of the impact the machines would have on the casino industry and the southern New Jersey economy.
