DON'T BET ON CASINO PLAN - 2004-01-23
A plan to place five big gambling casinos in New York City was on life support yesterday, just a day after Gov. Pataki announced the fund-raising effort.

"It's gasping," declared Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. "I hate it," announced Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, who suggested that even Pataki's heart wasn't in the plan.

Mayor Bloomberg has also said he's unhappy with using casinos to generate funds for education.

Huge crowds assembled in Monaco's famous Casino Square yesterday evening to see the beginning of the Monte Carlo Rally, the opening round of the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship.

The colourful start ceremony just outside the Casino itself heralded the beginning of three days of hard competition for the 43 starters over inhospitable mountain roads high in the frozen French Alps.

This morning the setting switched some 350km north to Tallard, just south of Gap, from where the first day started.
