Slots supporters speak out at - 2004-01-23
Only seven residents spoke up at Monday’s City Council meeting about the possibility of slot machines in the state, but more than half said they approved of them. Their viewpoints, however, are unlikely to persuade the mayor and council to alter their hard stance against gambling.
City officials have always been strongly opposed to any form of gambling, but wanted to get public input of the issue, particularly because Gov. Robert Ehrlich wants to legalize slot machines to generate revenue that could be used for education.
Mayor Jim Mathias said discussion about slots had surfaced back in the 1970s when they were legalized in Atlantic City, N.J. The Ocean City government opposed slots then, and remains opposed now.
