Municipalities get slots bucks - 2004-01-23
London and three other area municipalities are splitting a $1.9-million payoff from slots, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. announced. In the midst of debate over how much municipalities receive from the slots, the latest three-month payoff brings the total to $14.5 million to London, about $12 million to Point Edward, $1.8 million to Woodstock and $1.6 million to Central-Huron since gambling facilities opened in the communities.

That's about five per cent of the total take, not enough for some area politicians and civic leaders eyeing the millions coming in each quarter from gambling.

Group targets Pippy - 2004-01-23
An anti-gambling group named No Dice is calling on state Sen. John Pippy to abstain from voting on any bills to legalize slot machines at racetracks, but Pippy says he has no intention of refraining.

The Moon Republican said yesterday he supports the plan to put slots at racetracks because many of his constituents either work at The Meadows in Washington County or are interested in betting on slot machines there. He said he would vote for a slots-at-the-tracks bill in Harrisburg, but he hasn't decided if he supports slots at nontrack locations.
