First Step Taken in Shinnecock Casino Case - 2004-01-23
The word "casino" was spoken but once during a pretrial hearing yesterday as lawyers for the Shinnecock Nation assembled on one side of a U.S. District courtroom and attorneys for the federal, state and town of Southampton governments sat on the other.
"This is much more than a casino issue," Shinnecock tribal trustee Lance Gumbs said in the Central Islip courtroom. "Our existence is on the line here and who we are as a people. And that's more important to us than all the money in the world."
