Delawares File Federal Lawsuit To Pursue Gaming - 2004-01-24
As the state General Assembly prepares to consider
legislation allowing slot machines increase its education budget, the Delaware Nation of Anadarko,
Okla. took a first step toward having land or an alternative taken into federal trust to permit unregulated and untaxed gaming. On Jan. 15, it filed a land claim for 315 acres of ancestral land in Forks Township, of which they say they were wrongfully dispossessed over 200 years ago.

"The Delawares remain committed to working cooperatively with state officials to secure their right
to game in Pennsylvania," said Stephen A. Cozen, a Philadelphia attorney representing the Delaware Nation and the Delaware Tribe in Bartlesville.

Busch wants state to own slots facilities - 2004-01-24
House Speaker Michael E. Busch stated yesterday that he is still opposed to the legalization of slot machines in Maryland, but if lawmakers favor them,
he will use the results of a study to be published next week to push for the state to develop and operate the gambling dens.

The Anne Arundel Democrat, who says slots are bad public policy, stressed that he won't initiate any gambling bills in the House.

But, he said, if a gambling measure from Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. moves forward into the House, he will try to steer it to a state-owned model similar to that in Ontario, Canada.
