California Slots Initiative Moving Forward - 2004-01-27
A California ballot initiative to permit slots at five racetracks and 11 card rooms in the state took a leap forward Monday after Attorney General Bill Lockyer approved the measures legal title and summary.

The initiative now needs technical approval from Secretary of State Kevin Shelley before proponents can begin collecting the 598,105 valid signatures of registered voters needed to put the measure before voters Nov. 2.

The Gaming Revenue Act of 2004, as the initiative is called, would require each of California's 61 Indian tribes with casinos to pay 25% of slot machine profits to the state.

AG clears measure for non-Indian slot machines; police opposed - 2004-01-27
Proponents trying to end Indian tribes' monopoly on slot machines came a bit closer to getting their measure on the ballot Monday, but police chiefs vowed to challenge the plan that would expand gambling across the state.

The California Police Chiefs Association opposes putting 30,000 slot machines in 16 urban locations. Hollywood Park in Inglewood would become one of the world's largest casinos, and even the smallest casinos would have several hundred slot machines, the association said.
