Group questions FD council on casino’s impact - 2004-01-27
A group opposing the potential of legalizing gambling in Webster County has presented Fort Dodge city leaders with 40 questions on the influences a casino would have on local services.

The list was presented to the city council Monday by Gregg Hora of Fort Dodge, a spokesman for Don’t Gamble With Our Future Webster County.

‘‘Many of us believe that some answers need to be brought forward from this council,’’ Hora said.

Are the costs of developing casino gambling in Minnesota worth the benefits?

State coffers would benefit from the tens of millions of direct tax dollars a state-sponsored casino at Canterbury Park would create. The Minnesota-based owners of the horsetrack would surely benefit, also, as would the state's horseracing industry.

College students would benefit from another proposal, one that would likely put a casino at the Mall of America.
