MGM gambles on £270m Wembley move - 2004-01-28
Shares in gaming and leisure group Wembley went up 23 per cent yesterday after the world’s biggest casino operator MGM Mirage said it was purchasing the company for £270 million.

The owner of The Mirage, Treasure-Island and other resorts is offering 750p a share in cash for the owner of dog and horse racetracks and operator of video slot machines. Some £8.8m has also been put aside to pay for a possible fine and legal costs involved in a bribery case in the US.

Shinnecock Casino Trial Begins In Spring - 2004-01-28
Despite a potential settlement, the trial over the proposed casino in the Hamptons by the Shinnecock
Indian nation is set to start in April. Last Thursday morning, attorneys for New York State, Southampton Town, the federal government, and the Shinnecock tribe met in Islip for a preliminary discussion with presiding federal justice Thomas C. Platt.

The judge, who has stated he will decide whether or not the tribe may build and operate a casino on its 79-acre Hampton Bays property known as West Woods, urged the rival parties to meet this week to discuss a possible settlement.
