If DeJope Bingo Hall is converted into a casino, the city of Madison's annual share of Ho-Chunk revenue
will most likely be just enough to cover added police and fire costs, according to a city report released Tuesday.
It won't be a windfall for city residents, said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, who criticized a pro-casino group's advertising campaign that showcases how local governments might spend Ho-Chunk money if voters approve a Feb. 17 referendum to expand gambling at DeJope.
"They're overselling it," Cieslewicz said. "People are led to believe that all they have to do is choose between property tax relief, expanded emergency services, better schools or social services."
