Governor Backs Off Casino Tax, Track Slots - 2004-01-29
New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey surprised Wall Street gaming analysts Monday night with an unflinchingly pro-casino, pro-Atlantic City message.

"While some investors may have preconceived notions about the state's position on casinos, Gov. McGreevey made it clear that he plans to nurture Atlantic City, suggesting it is the 'crown jewel' of the state," Prudential Securities analyst Bill Lerner reported to his clients Tuesday.

McGreevey, however, was in no position to control what his colleague across the Delaware River wants - 36,000 slot machines in Pennsylvania.

Rendell has own gaming plan, cuts out Delawares - 2004-01-29
Attempts by the Delaware Tribe to build a casino in Pennsylvania took another hit this week after an announcement by Governor Ed Rendell. The Democrat said Tuesday that he was drafting his own gambling bill permitting slot machines at eight racetracks and four other places to be scattered throughout the state.

The legislation specifically excludes Indian gaming. Rendell said the measure would allow the state to collect up to $1 billion a year in gaming revenue. That money would in turn be used to slash property taxes by an average of 23 percent, or $339 a homeowner.
