More than 10,000 attend 1st day of casino-style gambling at Saratoga - 2004-01-29
The operators of Saratoga Gaming and Raceway said that at least 10,000 customers patronized the facility on its opening day Jan. 22.

Sportsystems, which runs the new facility, would not release revenue figures for the day. Sportsystems is a unit of Buffalo-based Delaware North Cos. Inc.

The facility features 1,300 video gaming machines, which offer similar gameplay to slot machines, but lack a pull handle, and feature up to 20 lines of randomly generated images to determine payoffs.

Slots foes prepare to emerge again in wake of governor's bill - 2004-01-29
Gambling opponents who have generally kept silent in the past year are re-energizing their resistance, now that Gov. Robert Ehrlich is making a second attempt to legalize slot machines in Maryland.

A group of Democratic state delegates, all longtime slots opponents, met informally Wednesday afternoon to discuss strategies for galvanizing their camp. They plan to emerge at a news conference next week, backed by leaders of community groups that still oppose expanded gambling.
