Gambling Opponents Reorganize Against Slots in Md. - 2004-01-29
Gambling opponents who have kept mostly quiet over the last year are re-energizing their resistance, now that Gov. Robert Ehrlich is making a second attempt to legalize slot machines in Maryland.

A group of Democratic state delegates, all longtime slots opponents, met informally Wednesday afternoon to discuss strategies for galvanizing their camp. They plan to emerge at a news conference next week, backed by leaders of community groups that still oppose expanded gambling.

Gaming Centers To Offer Video Lottery Terminals - 2004-01-29
The state has authorized video lottery terminals for eight race tracks throughout the state and Gov. George Pataki has proposed eight more at other venues.

The high-revenue slot-like machines in multimillion dollar "racinos," however, are in various stages and opening dates have changed in recent months. For example, Saratoga Raceway's center that opened Wednesday had been scheduled to debut New Year's Eve, and then two weeks ago.
