Casino Deal Can Be Worked Out For The State - 2004-01-03
The chief of the Jena Band of Choctaws says she is hopeful that she and the governor can work out a casino agreement that is fair both to her tribe and the state.

Gov. Mike Foster said Monday he's not certain he can get the deal he wants before he leaves office Jan. 12. The Jena Band has not agreed to a deal that would make up for the state's loss of revenue from competing casinos, he said.

"Frankly, I've got very little time, and this thing is on a short fuse. I think it's 50-50 if anything happens," Foster said Monday.

Casino an oasis during blackout - 2004-01-03
Most Bay Area businesses, like most homes, were among the approximate 30,000 customers left in the dark Friday.

But the few stores that found a way to stay open became havens for those wanting food, batteries and generators, if their supplies were not exhausted

The Mill Casino-Hotel was one of the few businesses in Coos County to stay online during the Friday blackout - and an island of hot food and entertainment for hundreds of residents lacking either.
