Casino plan insensitive - 2004-01-03
The proposal to construct an Indian casino east of Denver International Airport should be foiled before it even gets off the ground.

Contrary to supporters' claims, the plan has nothing to do with thoughtful, ongoing efforts to honor victims of the Sand Creek Massacre. Moreover, it's clear that Colorado voters don't want more gambling in this state, as just last fall they overwhelmingly rejected another gaming proposal.

The casino plan looks like opportunism cloaked in fine-sounding untruths. The former owner of the Telemundo Spanish-language television, Zee Ferrufino, and a Longmont entrepreneur, Steve Hillard, want to put a casino and tourist center along Interstate 70 just east of DIA.

Las Vegas Casino Sues Over Rosecroft Deal - 2004-01-03
A Las Vegas casino company has filed a lawsuit claiming that it holds the sole rights to operate and manage slot machines at Rosecroft Raceway in Oxon Hill, Md., a move that could complicate attempts to sell the track and develop gambling there.

Bally's Manager Inc., a subsidiary of Park Place Entertainment Corp., sued the proprietors of Rosecroft on Dec. 23 in Prince George's County Circuit Court. It accuses the owners of ignoring a 1997 deal that gives the casino company the right to control slot machines and other forms of gambling if they are legalized at the racetrack.

The breach-of-contract suit seeks $100 million in damages.
