Slots Galore -- and More - 2004-01-30
After creating an ostensibly balanced budget that the General Assembly's chief fiscal analyst claims is riddled with "questionable assumptions," Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) has presented his 2003 racing industry-enrichment plan, embellished this time with still more slot machines.

In addition to the 11,500 slot machines he called for last year at racetracks, Mr. Ehrlich seeks authority to add 4,000 more slots, at two non-track locations to be determined by a commission controlled by the governor.

Legislature debates slots - 2004-01-30
Gov. Ed Rendell is still attempting to get the Legislature to approve 12 sites for slot machines in the state, and Republican legislators are not happy with that. They would most likely pass a slot machine bill to permit slots at eight horse racing tracks consisting of the four in existence and four more to be built, including Erie.

Members of the State Senate are solidly against casinos and are against more than eight locations.
The other four would naturally involve two locations in Philadelphia, one in Pittsburgh and one in another possible resort location. One other thing, the legislation is not going to pass for a while, possibly summer.
