As Foxwoods expands, region benefits, too - 2004-01-30
The $99-million Rainmaker Casino development at Foxwoods is progressing perfectly and is on schedule for its midsummer opening. Foxwoods already is the largest casino in the world, and this expansion will help ensure it stays in first place.

Casinos regularly renovate or construct anew to keep looking fresh and entice gamblers to return. Foxwoods is on that track.

The Grand Pequot Towers Hotel, completed in 1997, was the last expansion there. It added 800 hotel rooms, 50,000 square feet of gaming space, 958 slot machines and 70 table games.

Casino layoff rumors churn - 2004-01-30
Some Tulalip Casino workers received notices Thursday of a compulsory staff meeting today, which fueled reports of possible layoffs.

Casino officials were unavailable for comment. The casino employs approximately 1,600 people.

Tribal officials previously have said the casino is doing well, despite basing revenue projections on, in their words, "overinflated estimates" of how much money the casino would make.

The Tulalips described the situation as a temporary cash-flow problem because the tribe is paying off a $120 million loan used to build the casino, a sewage treatment plant and a new health clinic in five years.
