Charities, churches bilked of millions - 2004-01-31
A group that organized casino nights for churches and charities stole money intended for blind people, cancer victims and recovering alcoholics, Parma police said Friday.

The Wayne County group pocketed at least $3 million from Las Vegas-style gambling nights in Cleveland, Parma, Akron and elsewhere, investigators said. All but $280,000 should have gone to dozens of churches and charities.

Casino Will Go On Ballot - 2004-01-31
Residents will get to vote in August on whether they
support bringing an American Indian-owned casino to Flint, even though the idea still might be a longshot.

The Flint City Council on Monday unanimously approved putting the question before voters the Aug. 3 primary ballot.

A casino could generate $18 million to $25 million a year in new revenue for the city, local casino backers say.
