240 Tulalip Casino Workers Laid Off - 2004-01-31
At least 200 casino employees were out of a job Friday night after an unexpected round of layoffs at the Tulalip Indian Casino.

When workers at the casino learned about the mandatory meeting first thing in the morning, many had a bad feeling.

"Oh ya, I knew exactly what was going on. I knew this was my final day here," said worker Bob Brown.

Why Plan For State-Owned Casino Might Be Against The Law - 2004-01-31
Last year, lawmakers and Gov. Rod Blagojevich approved a plan spelling out the essential steps to be taken for the state to own a riverboat casino. Some of those same lawmakers now say a newly proposed plan for a state casino is skipping many of those steps.

"The cart is way ahead of the horse here," said state Sen. Terry Link, a Vernon Hills Democrat who sponsored the law that contains the state-ownership provisions.

Penn National Gaming officials said they believe their plan is well within Illinois law.
