Agreement Puts Indian Casino Nearer To Reality - 2004-01-31
Officials with the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria said this week they have come one step closer to opening a casino south of Chico. Tribal officials said they reached an agreement with Station Casinos of Las Vegas to finance and build the project.

Casinos recently helped open the casino near Roseville, considered one of the most successful Indian casinos in the state.

Some charities and churches that police said used a Wayne County group to run benefit casino nights. State law permits operators of benefit gambling events to charge only for the rental of equipment and prohibits dealers from getting paid for their work. Moneypenny's group charged rental fees of as much as $2,000, investigators said. Those fees would have entitled the group to $280,000 for the 140 events it put on over two years.

But investigators and prosecutors said the group and its dealers collected at least $3 million and possibly as much as $5 million.
