Louisiana Sold For A String Of Beads - 2004-01-05
The Bush Administration had a Christmas Eve surprise for Mike Foster, one that could assure the outgoing governor's legacy as the best friend that the gambling industry ever had. The Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) gave its approval to permit the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians to open a full casino in Logansport.

In the process, the BIA has established the precedent that an Indiana tribe need not have a reservation or a historical claim to a piece of land. The ruling effectively permits any Native American group to build a casino on almost any given piece of property. And, they get to operate it tax-free.

Foes not giving up casino fight - 2004-01-05
Members of Citizens Concerned About Casino Gambling know the near future will be lined tough battles against a strong opposition, but they are not prepared to back off.

Leaders of the regional group said it has been campaigning against casino gaming in Rhode Island for 27 years and with the prospect of a statewide vote this year that could open the door to such a large-scale operation, the grassroots organization wants to step up its efforts.

Twelve local residents gathered around a table in a conference room at the police station Saturday morning as part of a regular monthly meeting, discussing ways to spread the word about keeping a casino out of the state.
