Detroit Council Tackles Casinos, Budget - 2004-01-05
The Detroit City Council returns from a monthlong break facing a slew of major issues - including casino develpment, adult-entertainment nightclubs, control of schools and a continuous budget crunch - that will likely dominate Detroit politics in 2004.

The issues the council will wrestle with include:

* City budget. The council, which must approve the city's budget, faced a $196 million deficit in 2003. The council will deliberate on the next budget this spring. The shortfall is expected to be higher than last year because of cuts in state and federal aid.

Concerts, shows top the week's activities - 2004-01-05
A concert at Eagle Mountain Casino and the opening of Murder By Misadventure at The Barn Theater top the list of events in the region this week. Trace Adkins, Buddy Jewell and Hanford-based Brandon Silveira are supposed to perform at Eagle Mountain Casino at 8 p.m. Saturday. A Louisiana native, Adkins is most recently famous for his hits, "Chrome" and "One Hot Mama."

Jewell, a singer and songwriter, is the winner of the television show, "Nashville Star." His song, "Help Pour Out the Rain," topped the country charts in 2003.
