Election slate set for city - 2004-01-06
Several incumbents intend to campaign on the strength of the public-private partnerships that are reviving the city's downtown area after years of stagnation. Other City Council incumbents and some challengers claim the city has accumulated too much debt while accommodating developers.
The city's central neighborhood renewal efforts, its strained relationship with neighboring communities and a lasting dispute over a west-side neighborhood
park also likely will provide fodder for debate among candidates and residents.
The debate in 2002 over whether to allow a casino in the city spurred Mary Kowatch, 41, of Sturgeon Eddy Road to get involved in local politics.
