Betting on bankruptcy - 2004-01-06
It's one last bit of bad financial news from a year that rendered many Western New Yorkers reeling.
The region set a dubious one-year record in 2003, with 9,547 bankruptcy filings. That tops the previous record by nearly 15 percent. And most of the cases were filed by individuals, as opposed to businesses.
Several factors fueled the increase, bankruptcy experts say, including unemployment, rising health care costs, bankruptcy lawyer advertising, the aggressive marketing of credit cards and a new casino in Niagara Falls.
