Betting on bankruptcy - 2004-01-06
It's one last bit of bad financial news from a year that rendered many Western New Yorkers reeling.

The region set a dubious one-year record in 2003, with 9,547 bankruptcy filings. That tops the previous record by nearly 15 percent. And most of the cases were filed by individuals, as opposed to businesses.

Several factors fueled the increase, bankruptcy experts say, including unemployment, rising health care costs, bankruptcy lawyer advertising, the aggressive marketing of credit cards and a new casino in Niagara Falls.

Board will consider waivers - 2004-01-06
The Regency Casino is seeking waivers of developmental standards from the Laughlin Town Advisory Board (LTAB). The LTAB will consider the waivers at the Jan. 13 meeting.

The Regency is seeking to put up a 600 square foot temporary tent that is to be situated at the entrance
to the casino. The tent will cover roughly five parking spaces and be in place for six months. George Yuill, general manager of the Regency Casino, said that he plans on leasing the tent to Leather Outlet-Luggage Outlet, which is located in the Horizon Outlet Mall.
