Artichoke Joe's looking for tax help - 2004-01-07
A second major local business is requesting the San Bruno City Council for a reprieve from the city's taxes because it is going through a difficult time.

Citing a decline in the number of local gamblers, and on the heels of a recent legal decision that could dramatically increase competition from Indian casinos, the owners of Artichoke Joe's Casino in downtown San Bruno have petitioned the city to extend an expired 30-percent reduction in its table taxes.

"We never regained our people that were coming. We lost quite a bit of our business," said Ron Cox, a construction manager for the casino and a Foster City councilmember, who put the loss of business at roughly 40 percent since BART construction began in San Bruno.

Rockford couple approved for future gambling facility - 2004-01-07
A Rockford couple has been given the go-ahead as owner/operators of a planned $60 million casino complex to be situated west of Interstate 35 on Hwy. 3, six miles west of Hampton.

Roger and Gayle Burnett, proprietors of Grand Casino Inc., approached the Franklin County Board of Supervisors two weeks ago about wanting to develop a casino in the county, assuming a gambling referendum passes muster by voters in the county on Jan. 27, and assuming the Iowa Legislature lifts a moratorium for more gambling licenses to be issued in the state.

The Franklin County Development Association has been designed as the owner of the gambling license for the county.
