Artichoke Joe's looking for tax help - 2004-01-07
A second major local business is requesting the San Bruno City Council for a reprieve from the city's taxes because it is going through a difficult time.
Citing a decline in the number of local gamblers, and on the heels of a recent legal decision that could dramatically increase competition from Indian casinos, the owners of Artichoke Joe's Casino in downtown San Bruno have petitioned the city to extend an expired 30-percent reduction in its table taxes.
"We never regained our people that were coming. We lost quite a bit of our business," said Ron Cox, a construction manager for the casino and a Foster City councilmember, who put the loss of business at roughly 40 percent since BART construction began in San Bruno.
