Branding casinos the "crack cocaine" of gambling, the head of a national anti-gambling organization implored a crammed conference room of casino opponents to work as hard as they can the next 43 days to keep a full-blown gambling hall out of Madison.

"Women say it's electric morphine," said the Rev. Tom Grey, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, referring to what he called the "trance" players can get in when sitting in front of a slot machine. "All they do is see the screen, and everything else turns to black around it."

Gov.-elect Kathleen Blanco, who opposed additional
gambling during her campaign, will wait for advice from her legal consultants before deciding whether to commence talks with an Indian tribe wanting a casino in northwestern Louisiana.

Meanwhile, two lawsuits seeking to stop the proposed casino have been filed.

Gov. Mike Foster, who had been negotiating with the Jena Band of Choctaws, handed the issue off Tuesday to the new administration after two lawsuits were filed challenging the project.
