Casino bosses consider tagging their chips - 2004-01-07
Breaking the bank at Monte Carlo could soon become more difficult with the appearance of new radio-transmitting casino chips.

The chips, which will be introduced later this year, contain tiny tags that broadcast a unique identification code.

Not only will they combat counterfeiting and theft, but they could help casino operators watch over gamblers.

US casino owners already routinely keep an eye on their tables with security cameras.

Fake bills: Lessons from casino - 2004-01-07
New casino chips with built-in radio identification tags may pave the way for traceable banknotes, helping efforts to put an end to fraud, New Scientist magazine reported on Wednesday.

A radio frequency identification tag (RFID) in the chips will enable casinos to spot counterfeits and monitor the behavior of gamblers, allowing them to check that big winners are not cheating the house.

The tags broadcast a unique identification code when triggered by a reader device and can work over distances of up to a few dozen metres.
