Plymouth casino critic Malick to seek council seat - 2004-01-07
Plymouth Mayor Darlene Scanlon stands by her decision to back a casino in the town, while a leading critic Elida Malick promised to fight the “seedy business” and will run for a council post in the recall election.

“Whether they recall us or not, the casino is coming,” Scanlon said Monday. “Either we deal with it and we get the money, or we don’t deal with it and we suffer the impact anyway.”

Malick, one of the organizers of “No Casino in Plymouth,” and a former council candidate, disagreed.

“If the chances are one in a million, there’s still a chance and we’re going to go for it,” Malick said.

Court rules against casino opponents - 2004-01-07
A Superior Court judge has ruled against an environmental challenge to a planned Indian casino near Shingle Springs, paving the way for construction to start as early as the middle of this year.

The court held that the environmental review of a proposed Highway 50 interchange was adequate, according to a news release from Lakes Entertainment Inc., which is under contract to construct and operate the proposed casino. The highway interchange is needed to provide adequate access to the casino.
