Editorial: Falk should have shared casino report - 2004-01-08
The failure of Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk's office to reveal a study of the pros and cons of casino gambling to the County Board and the Madison City Council is not as big a scandal as some in the No Dane Casino group would have us believe. A review of the report reveals that, as Falk's aides insinuate, it was not a particularly precise or comprehensive document.
But that does not mean that it was appropriate for Falk to withhold the report, which was prepared last year by the state- and county-funded Regional Planning Commission at the request of Falk's office and the city.
While Falk's chief of staff, Topf Wells, says the county executive's office made the decision to withhold the report from the public because it did not think the report contained useful information, Madison and Dane County residents and officials had a right to review the materials.
