D'Iberville casino could open in 2 years - 2004-01-08
An environmental impact statement for the Royal D'Iberville Hotel and Casino has been completed, and the positive results mean a casino could open in D'Iberville over the next two years.

The statement, which is at least 1,100 pages long and took three years for the Army Corps of Engineers to complete, revealed that in every case apart from one, a casino development will have no impact or a minimum adverse impact on the environment. Under the category of social and economic impact, the report found a casino would have beneficial effects.

"This is a vindication for the leaders of D'Iberville that they were doing a right thing in pursuing a casino," said Michael Cavanaugh, an attorney who has represented the city through its efforts to establish a casino.

Black Bear Casino and Hotel to expand - 2004-01-08
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is embarking on a $25 million development of its Black Bear Casino and Hotel in Carlton.

Plans call for doubling the hotel area, construction of an 800-plus seat auditorium, addition of a buffet-style restaurant and extra casino gambling space.

"We're running out of room," reservation executive director Jean Mulder said. "Our hotel is always full, and with the addition of the golf course, we just don't have enough room."

The band opened its $8 million, 18-hole Black Bear Golf Course in July. It added to Black Bear's attractiveness as a destination hotel, reservation planning director Gary Harms said.
