Casino Changes Slot Machines - 2004-01-08
Employees from a number of contractors and Sierra Design Group, of Las Vegas, Nev., are in a flurry of activity Tuesday morning as they work to set up half the 129 new electronic slot machines for free play.

The recognizable sound of change clanging inside the Coulee Dam Casino will soon be replaced with the much quieter sound of paper dispensing.

Monday and Tuesday workers were in the process of replacing the coin slot machines in the Coulee Dam Casino with voucher dispensing machines.

Aldermen and the city's lawyers are scheduled to meet behind closed doors today to discuss land acquisition for a casino, maybe one operated by a Native American gaming company.

Details about a proposed deal could be publicized Friday, sources revealed.

Leaders hope to score a profitable deal with a Midwestern tribe — whose identity hasn't been revealed — while wrangling continues in court over the license belonging to Emerald Casino Inc.

"There is still an interest. We believe we're still in the running and we want to have it here," Mayor Michelle Markiewicz-Qualkinbush said.
